Welcome to my channel @ellearningonline Have you ever stopped to think whether the words you speak actually mean what you think they mean? In this lecture, we explore structuralism in linguistics, focusing on how meaning is not natural or fixed, but produced through a system of differences within language. Drawing on the ideas of Ferdinand de Saussure, this video introduces the foundational concepts of modern linguistic theory in a clear and accessible way. The lecture begins with a conceptual hook that questions our everyday assumptions about words and meaning. From there, language is defined as a system of signs, where meaning arises not from direct reference to reality but from contrast with other signs in the system. This lecture follows an earlier discussion on varieties of language, especially the concept of register and its different main types such as formal, informal, frozen, consultative and intimate, and shifts the focus to structuralism in linguistics. It now shifts the focus to structuralism in linguistics, helping explain why words do not naturally mean what we assume they do and how meaning is produced within language. You will learn: What structuralism means in linguistics How Saussure defines language as a system of signs Why the relationship between a word and its meaning is arbitrary What is a sign, signifier, and signified How meaning is produced through difference, not direct reference The basic implications of structuralism for grammar and language structure This lecture does not aim to cover structuralism exhaustively. Instead, it provides a strong conceptual foundation for understanding Saussure’s theory of language, especially for students of linguistics, literature, and literary theory. Ideal for: Linguistics students Literature and English majors Beginners studying structuralism Exam preparation (signifier/signified, arbitrariness of language) Anyone interested in how language creates meaning 🔍 Key Topics & Keywords Structuralism in linguistics, Ferdinand de Saussure, language as a system of signs, arbitrariness of the sign, signifier and signified, sign in linguistics, meaning and language, linguistic structuralism, Saussure theory of language, grammar and meaning, introduction to structuralism, linguistics lecture, literary theory basics.
