In the 1980s, Mark Hofmann was well-known for selling historical documents to collectors and to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including the controversial “Salamander letter.” However, these discoveries began to come under scrutiny after Hofmann was accused of killing two people with pipe bombs in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1985. After Hofmann was injured in a car explosion, police discovered forged historical documents inside his car and materials to create the documents in his home. These discoveries shocked several historical and religious organizations, as Hofmann was credited with uncovering documents such as the Oath of a Freeman, the first printed document in American history, which was almost sold to the Library of Congress.
