Tango Topics: Syncopé - What is it?

Syncopè This word creates an enormous amount of confusion and misunderstanding. Truthfully in my years as a dancer studying to teach, when I asked what the word meant I was met with 10 different answers from 8 different teachers and 2 tango musicians. Suffice it said, I was a tad confused. So let’s dispense with all that and get to the heart of what this word means FROM A TANGO ONLY PERSPECTIVE. A ‘tango perspective’ means that the word is a marker to define the structure you are listening for in order to create movement from. Capice? What is ‘Syncopè’ ? First the word is pronounced ‘seen-koh-pah’, NOT ‘seen-koh-pay’. Secondly the word is best defined as as a pair of notes that happen in succession with a space or breath in between each pair of notes. Most people have been informed that a Syncopè is an off-beat structure. This is true to a point. However a Syncopè can occur in an on-beat or off-beat area as well. Next, most ppl believe or have been informed that a Syncopè is a syncopation. This is also true. It can appear as a syncopation element. Meaning that it sometimes coincides and/or acts as syncopation. However, while the word translates as syncopation from Spanish to English. It is NOT one more often than not, again — from a tango only perspective. Lastly we have to address the musical elephant in the room. Isn’t Syncopè a musical structure ? Answer ? Yes. However what the musician defines and what the dancer defines are sometimes different. Hence the Tango Only Perspective. Which is to say that while the musician will play these notes in succession, the dancer will bring their feet to collection as a ‘step-collect’. While talking about this is all fine and good, it’s best to show you what we are working with here. The example song that we are using is Rodolfo Biagi’s ‘El Trece’ (pron: el tray-say’). And we are only using the first 30 seconds. At the same time while there are other Síncopè in this snippet, we are only focusing on the 10 that are outlined as displayed. There are OTHER Síncopè that happen before AND between the two sections that are displayed. We are only paying attention to the 10 outlined. One more thing - Be civil in your commentary on this one.
