SOP Introduces self Asks patient for their consent to carry out the procedure Washes hands, or uses hand hygiene agent Assists the patient into a comfortable position. Ensures that the arm is at heart level and resting on a suitable firm surface Checks that the patient has been resting for 5 minutes and has not eaten for 30 minutes Ensures the arm is free of restrictive clothing Applies the cuff around the arm smoothly and firmly with the bladder centred over the brachial artery, approximately 2.5cms above the antecubital fossa. Reminds the patient of feeling of tightness and emphasises that this is temporary Palpates the radial artery. Inflates the cuff until the pulse is no longer palpable. Deflates the cuff rapidly and waits 15-30 seconds. Checks that the dial is at zero. Cleans the earpieces and diaphragm of the stethoscope Positions stethoscope over the brachial artery and inflates the cuff 2-3mmHg per second to 30mmHg above previously determined pressure Deflates the cuff at a rate of 2-3mmHg per second, notes when the first two consecutive beats are heard = systolic pressure Continues to deflate the cuff and note when the beats disappear = diastolic (listens for 10-20mmHg below the disappearance of sound). Removes cuff from patients arm Cleans ear-pieces and diaphragm of stethoscope Leaves patient comfortable Washes hands, or uses hand hygiene agent Reports and records findings
