In this video, I share how I care for my betta fish based on years of hands-on experience. Whether you’re setting up your first betta tank or want to improve your current setup, this guide covers the essentials: tank size, equipment, water parameters, diet, behavior, and more. Let’s start with the fish tank itself. While opinions vary, I recommend a rectangular tank of at least 8 gallons (30 liters) for most betta fish. Although bettas can survive in smaller tanks, I’ve found they thrive when given more space. Contrary to some advice, bettas don’t just float at the surface—they explore every corner of their aquarium when given the opportunity. In terms of setup, bettas come from slow-moving waters, so they don’t need strong filtration. I personally use a Nicrew Slim hang-on-back filter with sponge and floss for gentle flow. Sponge filters powered by quiet piezoelectric air pumps also work great. For heating, I keep my tanks at 27°C (81°F) using Fluval T-Series heaters, which I’ve found to be the most reliable for holding that temperature. Most budget heaters tend to struggle, especially at higher temps. Bettas appreciate a natural environment. I use live plants like Anubias, Crypts, and floating plants, which offer cover and reduce stress. Hardscape like driftwood and rocks also helps create a more stimulating and safe environment. Just be cautious with sharp edges that could tear long fins. Water quality is vital. I always pre-cycle my aquarium before adding fish, using the dark start method to build up beneficial bacteria. This helps keep ammonia and nitrite levels safe. If you’re doing a fish-in cycle, frequent water changes are a must. Bettas prefer water between 25–27°C (77–81°F) and can tolerate a pH between 6.0 and 8.0. Always use a dechlorinator when adding tap water to protect both your betta and the tank’s ecosystem. When it comes to feeding, I alternate between Fluval Bug Bites and Hikari Micro Pellets. My current betta, Marmalade, loves Hikari pellets so much that she’s started ignoring bloodworms completely. I usually feed small portions in the morning and adjust based on how interested she is later in the day. Every betta fish has a unique personality. Some are curious and peaceful, while others are more territorial. I’ve had bettas who lived peacefully with shrimp and others who hunted them relentlessly. This is why I usually recommend keeping bettas alone, unless you have experience or a backup tank. While some people successfully keep bettas with other fish, it’s always a gamble. Health is another important consideration. Fin rot, swim bladder disease, and even seizures can affect bettas—especially long-tail varieties that are more prone to injury and infection. Proper care, clean water, and high-quality food go a long way in preventing these issues, but even then, some health problems are tied to poor breeding practices. Despite these challenges, bettas remain one of my favorite species to keep. Their vibrant colors, engaging behaviors, and adaptability make them a great choice for beginners and experienced hobbyists alike.
