"Er Quan Ying Yue"《二泉映月》(The Moon Reflected in the Second Spring), played on the tiqin (提琴) by Fu Jianping (府剑萍) and the Suzhou Gusu Immortals Ensemble (Suzhou Gusu Xian Yuetuan, 苏州姑苏仙乐团), which was established in the late 1980s and comprises musicians from various Daoist temples in the area of Suzhou (苏州市), southern Jiangsu province (江苏省), east-central China, including Xuanmiao Temple (玄妙观). This is a rare solo performance on the tiqin, an instrument that was formerly used in ensembles accompanying Kunqu (昆曲, Chinese classical opera), the erhu gradually replacing it in this role by the early 20th century. The tiqin derives from similar instruments from Central Asia and the Middle East, and is the ancestor of the banhu (板胡), a coconut-bodied fiddle used mostly in northern Chinese music, as well as the yehu (椰胡), another coconut-bodied fiddle that is used primarily in southern China and Taiwan. "Er Quan Ying Yue" was composed by Hua Yanjun (华彦钧, 1893-1950), better known by his nickname Abing (阿炳), a musician from Wuxi who was himself employed as a Daoist musician in his early life. In 2006 Suzhou Xuanmiao Temple Daoist Music (苏州玄妙观道教音乐) was included in the first batch of 518 traditions inscribed in the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China (第一批国家级非物质文化遗产名录) by China's Ministry of Culture (中华人民共和国文化部, known since March 2018 as the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, 中华人民共和国文化和旅游部). The sub-agencies responsible for maintaining these lists, both under the aegis of the aforementioned ministry, are the Department of Intangible Cultural Heritage (文化部非物质文化遗产司) and the China Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center (中国非物质文化遗产保护中心, CICHPC).
