The Zoom H4n is getting a little long in the tooth these days but you can still get some great use out of it. The big downside of the H4n were the noisy preamps. This method can be used with any recorder, not just the H4n. I use a Fethead, which is an inline preamplfier which provides 27db of clean gain, allowing you to not have to raise the gain levels on the recorder.
