I’m going to assume you can hear me—because this week’s Torah portion quietly drops something that most people read right past. In Exodus (Va’era), Hashem says something wild to Moshe. So wild that if you read it too fast in English, you’ll miss it entirely. Hashem tells Moshe: “You will be Elohim to Pharaoh… and Aharon will be your prophet.” Wait. Pause. Did God just call a human Elohim? This is where translation gets dangerous. Most of us see “Elohim” and instantly think: God. But Hebrew isn’t English—and Torah doesn’t flatten words the way translations do. Elohim is a title of authority, not a name. It’s used for: • Hashem Himself • Judges • Angels • Rulers • Those acting with divine authority Same word. Different levels. Different contexts. And yes—it’s plural in form, yet often singular in meaning. That’s not an accident. Elohim functions like a capital letter. Not multiple beings. But elevated authority. So no—this is not saying Moshe is Hashem. And no—this isn’t some mystical confusion. Here’s the clarity Torah gives us: 👉 People can be what Hashem appoints. 👉 People can never be Hashem Himself. Huge difference. Hashem alone is eternal, uncreated, incomparable. But He does delegate authority. He does invest humans with His power to act, judge, speak, and represent Him in the world. That’s why Aharon is called Moshe’s prophet. Because Moshe is operating with delegated Elohim-authority. And this matters more than people realize. Because later, when people accuse Yeshua of “making Himself God,” He points them back to the Psalms—where human judges are literally called elohim. The problem wasn’t the word. The problem was that people didn’t understand Hebrew categories. Torah is precise. We just aren’t always careful readers. So let’s not get crazy with interpretations. But let’s also not shrink the text because it makes us uncomfortable. Here’s the takeaway: • Humans can carry divine authority • Humans can speak on God’s behalf • Humans can be called elohim in function But no human is Hashem. Ever. This portion isn’t about blurring lines. It’s about understanding them. And once you see it—you can’t unsee it. 🕍✡️🕎🍷🔯🍞🕍✡️🕎🍷🔯🍞 Benei Avraham is a Traditional Jewish Congregation, Inspired by Mashiach. We help Jews who believe in Yeshua do a formal return to Judaism.
