A girl who is still a minor must not be married and there should be no exceptions to that. Marriage can never be a solution to rape. It's a crime and must be punished." 20. Various of family walking to graveyard STORYLINE: The tragic suicide of a 16-year-old girl who had been pressured by a court to marry her rapist has highlighted the need for an urgent law change in the north African kingdom of Morocco. The parents of Amina Filali say she took her own life last weekend, after leading a miserable life of abuse with her attacker and his family in the marital home. Amina, who was raped at the age of fifteen, is now buried in a graveyard close to her parents' home. "He raped my daughter, he mistreated my daughter. She complained to me that she was mistreated, that she didn't get fed, that he threatened to kill her if she stayed there," Amina's mother Zohra Filali wept. Article 475 of the Moroccan penal code allows for the "kidnapper" of a minor to marry his victim to escape prosecution, and it has been used to justify a traditional practice of making a rapist marry his victim to preserve the honour of the woman's family. The victim's father, Hamidu Filali, says he was against the marriage but that court officials pushed the marriage option when they reported the rape. He said his daughter was accosted on the street and raped when she was 15, but it was two months before she told her parents. He said the court pushed the marriage, even though the perpetrator initially refused. Filali said he only consented when faced with the prospect of his daughter's prosecution for debauchery.
