I'm back! Alongside the new season of Go Battle League which brought with it a ton of updates to moves, giving Pokemon new moves, buffing old faves, making useless potentially viable and more. Looking at all these changes I knew one that was going to get overlooked was the Mud Slap buff. Mud Slap historically has always been a purely fast move pressure type move, similar to Charm but not as viable, especially when we compare it to the energy beast that is Mud Shot and the PVP behemoths that dominate using it like Swampert, Galarian Stunfisk, Whiscash and more. But Mud Slap got a buff to its energy generation meaning that not only is it hard hitting for intense pressure, it can get to low cost charge moves at a reasonable pace now. While there are a few Pokemon with access to this move we can talk about, one that jumped out to me is Golurk in the Retro Cup, since I already had a decent IV shadow lying around I decided why not and gave it a go. Golurk is fairly attack weighted meaning it can capitalise on the intense fast move damage pressure Mud Slap exerts which is further amplified by the shadow boost. It also has access to some pretty fantastic charge moves, Shadow Punch only takes 4 Slaps to reach now and threatens at least moderate damage on anything that isn't double resisting it. It also has access to Dynamic Punch to one-shot any normal or ice type that gets in its way as well as Earth Power and Poltergeist for some unimaginable damage. We're opting for Shadow Punch as it's STAB and has low energy cost, as well as Dynamic Punch so we can one-shot some Vigoroths and Abomasnows. Pairing up with Golurk we're bringing Vigoroth with new access to Rock Slide, which looks promising to make Vigoroth even stronger in GBL. As well as Altaria, since nothing in this Cup resists dragon damage and to add some much needed bulk to offset how squishy Golurk is. The team overall performs well, with Golurk able to hard punish popular safe swaps like Vigoroth and Vigoroth itself punishing any ice types that may want to threaten our Altaria. The Team takes me on a distinctly positive win streak, averaging 4 out of 5 wins for most sets I played with it. Here I'm bringing you a selection of battles using this team so you can get a feel for how it works and whether you want to consider this team, or at least any Pokemon on it, for yourself to use in the Retro Cup. While I didn't record all matches I played with this team this should give you a feel for where it excels and where it struggles.
