These proverbs were wise words from a man named King Lemuel, and his mother taught him these things when he was growing up. The King named Lemuel cannot be found in any historical documents, so it is assumed this person used a pen name. Some people think King Lemuel was actually King Solomon, and his mother was Bathsheba. But, no one is certain. King Lemuel described what his mother taught him. He wrote: don’t give your strength to many women or do things that destroy kings. It is not for kings to drink alcohol. They may forget the laws of the land and actually break them. They may pervert justice and forget the rights of the poor. Give strong drink only to those people who are perishing. Give wine to those people whose life is bitter and they have only hell to look forward to. Let them drink and forget that they wallow in their own filth. But the king should never drink alcohol. The king must open his mouth for the infant, the mute, and all the other people who cannot speak for themselves. The king must judge righteously and defend the rights of the afflicted and poor. King Lemuel’s mother continued teaching him, who can find an excellent wife? There are so many worthless women out there. In fact, most of them are lazy, filthy, and worthless. But there are a few amazing women in the world. An excellent wife’s worth is far above massive amounts of gold and jewels. Here are some characteristics of this type of woman. She will fear the Lord. Her husband can trust her. She does him good and not evil all the days of her life. She works with her hands with delight. She has a pleasant attitude. She brings her family food from afar. She wakes before the sun comes up to prepare food for her household. The King continued: She looks at a field and buys it. She earns money and plants a vineyard with her profits. Her arms are strong. She makes clothing for her family, and the needy. She is not afraid of the weather, because she is well prepared and her family has everything they need. She makes linen garments and belts and sells them to tradesmen. She is dignified and smiles at the future. She teaches with kindness and wisdom. She is never lazy. Her children bless her. Her husband praises her and says ‘many women have done good things, but you excel them all. I’m proud of you, and I’m glad you are my wife’. The most important verse in this chapter is Proverbs 31:30 which states, ‘Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised..’ The thing I think the Lord wants us to understand after reading this chapter is that kings should not drink alcohol, and alcohol should only be given to people who are perishing so they can temporarily forget about judgement day. He wants us to know the righteous should speak up for people who have no voice and should defend the rights of the poor. And God wants us to know the characteristics of an excellent wife. Most women do not fall into that category, but there are a few. An excellent wife will have a good attitude, will be trustworthy, will work diligently, will provide for her family, and will be godly. Are you a woman who could be described by King Lemuel’s mother as an ‘excellent wife’? If not, remember… it’s not too late to change until your dying breath. Why don’t you turn to the Lord if you haven’t already? Repent for your sin and turn to Jesus for salvation. Jesus humbled himself and died on a cross in my place and your place, and the Father raised Jesus from the dead. God said if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and if you believe in your heart that the Father raised Jesus from the dead, you would be saved. Why don’t you do that right now?
