In 1960, during her royal tour of Northern Rhodesia, Queen Elizabeth II visited Barotseland, where she was officially received by Litunga Imwiko I, the King of the Lozi people. The visit was marked by a traditional Barotse royal welcome, including a ceremonial river procession inspired by the Kuomboka tradition. Litunga Imwiko I, who ruled from 1945 to 1968, hosted the Queen at a time when Barotseland held a special semi-autonomous status under British protection, following earlier agreements such as the 1900 Barotseland Agreement. The meeting symbolized the deep political and ceremonial ties between Barotseland and the British Crown.
