James Kalm first became aware of the work of Bill Jensen when he attended the controversial "American Painting: The Eighties" exhibition. Curated by Barbara Rose. This was an early harbinger of what became known as "the return to painting". Despite staunch resistance from academic pundits with a vested interest in maintaining their strangle hold on New York's creative class, painters like Jensen worked on, and developed lifelong practices in opposition to the minimalist and conceptual dogmas that had lingered for decades. "Transgressions" presents works that display the experimental and risky mode of painterly investigation Jensen brings to his work. Influences from ancient Chinese poetry, Renaissance paintings and Soviet cinema all add to the complex mélange of sources for these compositions. The San Francisco band Battlehooch provides a musical interlude which was recorded on the street at Cooper Union.
