Drug dealer networks, hacker communities, and far-right extremists have a thing in common: they are empowered by new digital tools- like cryptocurrencies and encrypted messaging- and have become much harder to stop. Crackdowns now stimulate innovation and restructuring, as actors can collaborate and communicate from the shadows. Isak Ladegaard argues this in his new book, Open Secrecy, published by University of California Press. In this exclusive FCC panel discussion, Ladegaard and HKU criminologist Paul Josse will focus on the digital empowerment of the American far right, and examine its capacities and challenges in the current political climate.
