'Children As Citizens' was a session with Akshita, Rahul and Lakshmi Kaul from the Kiddy Kingdom Academy Samiti in Lucknow, held on Zoom and Facebook Live. They talked about the project under the National Schools category of our Arts Education programme, that unfolded as a vibrant exploration of how children can meaningfully engage with their environment and grow into active, aware citizens of their city. In a participatory process with the children, the project actively tried to bring the students’ lived experiences, thoughts, and imaginations into their school, with artists, historians and the community as resources. Kiddy Kingdom Academy Samiti (KK Academy), Lucknow, is a state-recognised institution established in 1989 with five children. Today they accommodate over 200 students from different social strata. Akshita is a budding educator with roots in ecology and a mind always open to learning. She learns from children as much as she teaches, in a hope to give back what she gathers along the way. Rahul is a CA turned educator and a tinkerer who solves problems, be they of the mind, the material world, children, or teams. With an eye for numbers and a heart for learning, he is a jack of all trades. Lakshmi Kaul is an educator who turned a garage into KK Academy, a thriving school for children, many of them first-generation learners. A champion of inclusive, low-cost education, she has redefined what it means to teach with purpose, passion, and persistence. This Foundation Project is implemented by India Foundation for the Arts (IFA) under the Arts Education programme, supported by Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Company.
