The Spanish royals escaped the media spotlight back home after last week's announcement that Crown Prince Felipe will marry Spanish television journalist Letizia Ortiz next summer. The royals had no public comment here on the marriage plans of Felipe, who at 35 is the youngest of their three children and heir to the Spanish throne as the royals' only son. As part of an unofficial three-day visit, the Spanish king and queen met privately in the pink palace known as the Casa Rosada, with new President Nestor Kirchner and his wife, Cristina. Kirchner planned to accompany the royals later on Wednesday in his native Santa Cruz province on an afternoon boat cruise on an icy lake fronting the towering Perito Moreno glacier. In Buenos Aires, the visit by the royals drew small groups into the streets to watch. A military honour guard of granaderos in plumed hats and gold-tassled uniforms rode horseback with sabers drawn. The monarchs arrived in Argentina on Tuesday on a stopover en route to an Ibero-American summit of 21 heads of state that opens Friday in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia. They also planned to meet with Spanish artists, intellectuals and businessmen in Argentina prior to the summit. It was the royal couple's third visit together to Argentina since their first in 1978 during a military dictatorship. The royals also visited in 1985, two years after the restoration of democracy.
