We didn't know much about Lithuanian food apart from small bits of information we had from our Lithuanian friends in the UK, but we soon discovered that it is an eclectic blend of both Baltic and Eastern European foods which creates something very unique and tasty! Our Lithuanian food tour kicks off in a vibrant food court, where we try iconic dishes like Cepelinai (potato dumplings), refreshing Šaltibarščiai (cold beet soup), and crispy Bulviniai Blynai (potato pancakes) with creamy mushroom sauce — a must-try for anyone experiencing Lithuanian food culture. After this, we stop by Crustum Bakery to indulge in a rich slice of Napoleon cake (which is a classic Russian puff pastry dessert popular in the area too). From there, we visit a local grocery store, discovering unique Lithuanian products like smoked cheese, spreads, Sakotis (traditional Lithuanian tree cake), Elizabeth plums, and Gira (fermented bread drink). We also noticed something unique about shopping in Lithuania: alcohol aisles are restricted after a certain time, which caught us by surprise! To wrap up, we visit a vibrant local bar to try some Lithuanian craft beer before taking our goodies back to our apartment to continue sampling these authentic Lithuanian treats which was full of unexpected surprises too!
