Title: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗨𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗹𝗮 Speaker: 𝗟.𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵. 𝗘𝗻𝗣 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝗹𝗼 𝗚. 𝗔𝗹𝗰𝗮𝘇𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻, 𝘗𝘎𝘈𝘈 𝘊𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 Although the seeds of modernism in architecture and urbanism were planted in the Philippines in the late Spanish colonial period, buildings and the rational (or irrational) layout of an expanded Manila only saw rapid transformation at the turn of the 20th century under American rule. The need to modernise Manila and its arrabales, or suburbs, was driven by the Insular, and later the Commonwealth, government's desire to bring the country into the mainstream of the world's socio-political and economic progress. This evolution in design and planning of the capital started with civic structures and complexes but moved to commercial, industrial, and infrastructural typologies as well. This talk will outline the evolution of modernity in architecture and planning through key projects and influential personalities in the 20th century- American as well as Filipino... from Daniel Burnham to Felino Palafox. It will also touch on the parallel evolution of the education of architects and the practice of design in the Philippines, with trends started by Manila that influenced the whole of the country over the decades; a situation that still lasts to this day.
