Game Info --------------------------------------------------- Developer: Namco Publisher: Namco Year of Release: 1994 Game Review & Impressions --------------------------------------------------- A really weird premise for what amounts to an early template for deathmatch-style battle royales, Outfoxies feels like a progenitor for Capcom's Power Stone games, and is really quite unlike any other fighting games. Players choose from a roster of characters that do battle with each other across stages which range from the inside of a flying fortress, to a steaming locomotive, all in the name of fulfilling the whims of the mysterious villain orchestrating this ghoulish spectacle of entertainment. Each level is viewed as a horizontal cut-away of whatever building or vehicle the action is due to take place within. The camera keeps both characters visible on the screen at all times by zooming in and out, which is a really interesting use of sprite scaling technology. When the sticks are down and the gloves are off, the camera gets up close and personal as combatants slug it out, zooming back out when the heat gets too much and someone decides to make a break for a weapon or power-up. Knowing where and when these weapons spawn can turn the tide of any fight, and much like Doom, Quake and Unreal, making a tactical retreat to grab these items can be a real life-saver. I think it's cool Namco dared to do something different with The Outfoxies, although I think it makes for a better multiplayer experience than playing solo. You'll never experience the same satisfaction in beating an AI opponent that you would a human, and I found the game somewhat underwhelming as a result.
