MOUNT HAKKODA (1977) - Ken Takakura meets Kumiko Akiyoshi the local guide.

This clip shows a couple of scenes from 1977 Japanese movie "Mount Hakkoda." It is a blockbuster movie based on the Hakkoda Mountains Incident that occurred in January 1902. The first 16 seconds of this clip shows us the terrible state the Aomori Regiment has been put into. Before reaching their first-night destination, which is the Tashiro Hot Spring, they have been stuck in a severe blizzard, having no choice but to bivouac. In the meantime, the Hirosaki Regiment is in a shabby residence at Utarube Village along the southeastern shore of Lake Towada. They are about to embark on their march through one of the most dangerous sections in the entire itinerary (which includes the crossing over Inuboe Pass). A female guide named Sawa (played by Kumiko Akiyoshi) is introduced to them. Her farther-in-law begs Captain Tokushima (Ken Takakura) in a rather strong Aomori accent: "The weather is terrible. If Sawa said during the march that it would be impossible to cross over the pass due to the bad weather, then please don't scold her, just let her leave."
