As a kid, I really beat myself up over missing that last line of the fifth grade play. But looking back, I noticed why I had even missed lip-syncing the line in the first place... Because an adult finally showed up for me. I was so stunned I couldn't regain my grip on reality long enough to say the line. I was so convinced that my family would not be in that crowd, let alone dressing up and making it a whole occasion. My parents abandoned me. But for whatever reason, Dad tried to make it right at one point in my life. I think he may have realized I was growing up without him- that he was too busy working and people pleasing and drinking to care about my life's most precious moments. So...he started to be there. At long last, Black Bird received the love and attention she and Wild Child deserved from the start. Mom wasn't there. But Dad and his entire side of the family was. They gave me flowers, they took photos, they cheered at the end- and I'll never forget it. Kids will always remember when you don't show up for them.
