My Instagram - / volkswizard.co.uk Thanks to VW UK for having me on this incredible VW Drive Day event. I am really sorry I didn't get to try anything other than a Golf R as there just wasn't time sadly. Many years ago I bought a Mk7 Golf R new. Nobody at the time knew what to expect as it hadn't been reviewed in the UK until the first customers took delivery (of which I was one). I'd bought it to replace a 2006 911 (997) Carrera 4S as I just fancied a newer car and thought it might offer a fair bit of the Porsche character and even its pace. The speed was similar but the R lacked any significant personality so I sold it and bought a 996 Carrera 4S (my second) and then when the Clubsport S came out, this was the car I'd been dreaming of (still got that 2 years later...) So as a weekend car the Golf R failed, but does it stack up as a daily driver more successfully? When the Estate version came out I have to admit I did get quite excited being a fan of fast Audi estates but I was unsure if the R could quite cut is as a premium wagon and did I really needed 300 PS in a daily drive anyway? So when the chance came to drive one for the first time, courtesy of VW UK, I couldn't say no and I share my finding here with you in this short & hopefully sweet video. Please comment as I try and answer them all.
