Isolation Video 287 I Am a Rock by Paul Simon recorded by Stephen Mendel on Dec 29, 2020 I'm not sure how long it takes for a song to become a folk song, but I've loved "I Am a Rock" from the moment I heard it, probably in 1966. Paul Simon wrote the song in the early 60s and first recorded for his solo album, The Paul Simon Songbook, released in August of 1965 only in the United Kingdom. By the time it came out, Simon and Garfunkel's Wednesday Morning 3AM, was taking off and Simon returned to New York and re-recorded Rock with Garfunkel for their Sounds of Silence album released in Jan of 1966. When the Songbook Album was finally released in the US, Simon almost repudiated it in the liner notes saying that on the album were songs he would not write today, "it's just not me anymore." I could only wish to have written songs that Paul Simon doesn't care for anymore. Lyrics A winter's day In a deep and dark December I am alone Gazing from my window to the streets below On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow I am a rock I am an island I've built walls A fortress deep and mighty That none may penetrate I have no need of friendship friendship causes pains It's laughter and it's loving I disdain I am a rock I am an island Don't talk of love Well I've heard the word before It's sleeping in my memory I won't disturb the slumber of feelings that have died If I never loved I never would have cried I am a rock I am an island I have my books And my poetry to protect me I am shielded in my armor Hiding in my room safe within my womb I touch no one and no one touches me I am a rock I am an island And a rock feels no pain And an island never cries
