There's one thing that you can negotiate into your first tractor purchase that doesn't cost your dealer anything (but some time) and could greatly enhance getting off on a good foot with your new equipment. That's a "walkaround". A walkaround is training for new owners in the workings of their new tractor, and it's something we offered with every sale at S & H Farm Supply where I used to work. We'd have a technician show a new customer all aspects of operation, maintenance and safety with their new tractor before it left the premises and it really started them off on a good foot with their new toy. I wish it was my idea to institute the program but the owners of the company came up with it. It was surprising how many seasoned operators also did the walkaround. Even customers who had operated tractors all their lives seemed to always get something from the experience. The walkaround is a good idea and really pays for itself. Without it, the dealership may be getting a call from a new operator who is confused about how to run their new tractor. The time spent training may more than offset trying to diagnose an issue on the phone that may be related to a lack of knowledge on the part of a novice operator. Not every dealer offers a walkaround, but they should. If they don't, use that as a negotiation tool when purchasing the tractor. Tell the salesperson that you'll buy the tractor if they'll throw in 30 minutes of training from one of their technicians. You'll not only be getting good training from people who know the tractor inside and out, but you'll also be developing a relationship with the service department at the dealership who will be taking care of you if you have mechanical issues. Those folks are good to know. I'm not sure I'd buy from a dealer that refused to give a walkaround. It's one negotiating tool that is a win/win for everyone involved. LINKS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT...
