I work for a day at the renowned La Esquina del Sabor Garifuna restaurant to show you the culinary culture of the Garifuna people in Honduras. You'll learn how the Garifuna people prepare seafood, coconut soups, yuca casaba, fried plantains, plantain tostones, plantain machuca, guifiti rum, lobsters, and more. You'll meet the founder, Reny Gutierrez, who, after working crushing hours as a line chef at a factory, decided to make his childhood dream come true and open a restaurant. Reny began cooking when he was 7 years old in a coastal town in Colón. When he opened his current restaurant in San Pedro Sula, he had so little money customers sat on borrowed chairs, and he didn't know how he was going to pay rent. His hard work paid off—Reny is now an award-winning chef who specializes in Garifuna-flavored seafood. The Garifuna people are a mixed African and indigenous people who originally lived on the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent and speak Garifuna. They are the descendants of indigenous Arawak, Kalinago (Island Carib), and Afro-Caribbean people.
