Building on advances in transfer learning, we now have the tools to make tangible progress to enabling more widespread access to language technology. In this talk, I will give an overview of state-of-the-art methods that transfer knowledge across languages. I will discuss ingredients that make these methods work, highlight challenges, and new methods for scaling them to languages with limited amounts of data. Finally, I will cover benchmarks and frontiers on the way to scaling these methods to the world's languages. About the speaker: Sebastian Ruder is a research scientist in the Language team at DeepMind, London. He completed his PhD in Natural Language Processing and Deep Learning at the Insight Research Centre for Data Analytics, while working as a research scientist at Dublin-based text analytics startup AYLIEN. Previously, he studied Computational Linguistics at the University of Heidelberg, Germany and at Trinity College, Dublin.
