In this episode of Restore It, I'm restoring this Tri-ang Major Tractor Pedal Car made in the 1950s in Britain. This is my best work yet. The body was covered in rust, and the paint was doing well for its age. Once everything was apart, I removed the paint with paint stripper, as it contained lead. I also decided to dismantle the wheels. I then shot blasted all of the rust and leftoverpaint off using aluminium oxide grit. With everything back to bare metal, I could now see the damage. With the use of bodywork hammers and dollies, I fixed the dents and imperfections in all of the parts, including the mudguards, forks, bonnet, wheels, and more. Some welding was required to fix the hole for the exhaust, some of the wheel faces and the forks. I also had to weld and shape new tabs to the bearing cases. Next, all of the small pieces were zinc plated in my DIY electroplating kit. I decided to swap over the hubcaps to the inner faces of the rear wheels so the good side would be on show.To protect the bare metal from rust, I gave them two coats of epoxy primer. For the rear axle I went to WeldTech Engineering & Fabrication, where Brendon made a new one, using a custom jig. I could then add the bearing case and new bearings to the axle. I rebuilt the wheels now that both sides are fully protected. The missing seat suspension was purchased and welded in place once the bracket was straightened. With the epoxy primer dry and sanded, the first lot of body filler was added. The tyres were too far gone, so I made new ones using rubber hose, three-phase wire, some plastic tube, and CT1 adhesive and sealant. The pedal sleeves were replaced with new tubing, and the pedals were replaced with new old stock Tri-ang tractor pedals. The body filler was sanded, and another two coats of epoxy were added. The steering blocks were fixed, cleaned, and zinc plated. I designed a new exhaust using a photo I found online and then 3D printed it using the ELEGOO Saturn Ultra 4. My dad created the missing trailer on paper, which I then gave to OPTIMA Metal Services to laser cut. I then welded the trailer together and created the axle to go with it. More filler was then added to most parts and then sanded. Two coats of high-build primer went on next. I visited Hyrosteps to have a drawbar bent for the tractor. The trailer was then epoxy primed and high-build primed, along with its wheels and drawbar. Once all of the high-build primer was flat, I gave everything three coats of colour. The pedals were cleaned and polished, and a bump stop was cut for the suspension. New decals were purchased as well as a small handful of new parts. The tractor was then reassembled, the trailer attached, and the restoration completed. Thanks for watching; I hope you enjoyed it. What is your favourite part in the video?
