So, here it is then! What we're going to be seeing in this vid, is a fully-kitted & ready variac & what you DON'T get, out-of-the-box. For those coming from my previous channel, you may remember this being unboxed in Video 200, which was the 200th video on that channel. Well, IT'S BACK AS VIDEO 200 AGAIN! :D The difference this time? It's now fully kitted-up & ready for business IN FULL HD, 1920 x 1080p! So, let's look at it then. What it is, what it does, what it can do, and most importantly: What it CANNOT do! Let me just cover this RIGHT NOW by saying: It's not a super- fandango magic abra-cadabra "Blows-Stuff-Up" unit! If you're going to buy a variac & plan to connect things to it in order to "Blow-Stuff-Up", then you may suffer disappointment very quickly: That's NOT WHAT this unit is for (or any other size!) If that's your plan for buying a variac, JUST DON'T BOTHER. Honestly, I've seen a number of "Variac-Operator-Wannabes" come & go over the years, thinking that they can "Stick-It- On-The-Variac-And-Pop-It". They don't last or stick around too long. THEY LEARNT THE HARD WAY. DON'T BE NEXT! Now that I have said all of that, what is it really for then? If it doesn't magically pop anything and everything... WHAT CAN A VARIAC DO? WHAT'S ITS PURPOSE? You can select a voltage. That's it. Yes. It's a transformer with a voltage selection dial on top. OK, with the model I have, it's possible to INCREASE the output voltage, but not by much. This is where people get the wrong idea about variacs and that they can somehow "Blow-Stuff-Up". So, how does it do it? Here's the technical stuff. Concentrate! Most transformers have something called a "primary" winding & a "secondary" winding. Then there's Auto Transformers. These have only one winding & these can increase or decrease the output voltage. Because they have only one winding, they cannot in any way isolate from earth, so you need to be aware of this! Then there's VARIABLE Auto Transformers. Set up similar to an Auto Transformer, but you can select the output voltage. Hold on. That sounds like a variac. That's because it is! :D The technical term for 'variac' is "Variable Auto Transformer". Variac is just a brand name, thought-up by some company somewhere. Every variable auto transformer has been lumped with that name since, rather-much in the same way as most people refer to their vacuum cleaner as a 'Hoover', even if it is an Electrolux, Henry, Dyson or whatever. So, selecting a voltage. How? Firstly, the voltage has to be reduced WITHIN the winding itself rather-much in the same way as any other transformer. Those other voltages are not normally accessible due to the whole of the winding being insulated. This is where the variac shines: The single winding of the variac is wrapped 'toroid' style, then the top of the winding is left exposed (or the insulation is taken off somehow) This allows the various voltages at those points to be accessed with a carbon 'brush' which sits on top of the winding. This brush can be moved around the winding by the selection dial on top. In this vid, we see a fully-kitted variac, ready for business. It does not come supplied like that, nor do you get the wheels: That costs extra! In the box, was a variac, complete with a terminal cover. Nothing else at all. In a way, that's not so much a bad thing as it allows the user (or owner of the variac) to customise the installation of it in whatever way they like, just like I have done with my one, as you can see in this video. I've put wheels on my unit (others have been at it since! :D) This allows the variac to be moved much more easily. With larger units, it's a definite bonus, as it can be moved by rolling it along the floor. The arrival of this variac definitely opened new doors on my YT channels: OK, I did use this one for trying to "Blow-Stuff-Up" and in recent times, being given two high-current transformers and a special wiring config, Phantom Loading of electricity meters is now possible, as well as precisely set, Phantom-current based Electricity Meter Accuracy Testing! So very, very TASTY! :D To close this, I say: If you have a legitimate use for a variac, I'd most certainly say GET ONE!! The Sssatisfaction is immense when turning the dial! :D So here it is, back again as Video 200 on Wayne's Electrical! :D Need more "Electrical" type videos? In that case then, head over to the "Electrical" playlist and have a look in there. :D Thanks for watching. -Wayne's Electrical.
