San Diego County Work Furlough Program – How to Qualify & What to Expect If you’re serving time in San Diego County, the Work Furlough Program may offer you a second chance. In this video, criminal defense attorney Neil Shouse of Shouse California Law Group breaks down how the program works, who qualifies, and what the rules are. The Work Furlough Program allows eligible inmates to maintain full-time employment—or search for work—while still completing their sentence. Participants must return each night to the Work Furlough and Residential Re-Entry Center Facility on South 35th Street. It’s not the same as work release—participants do not go home at night. To be eligible, inmates must be on formal probation and must have served at least 30 days in custody. Applications are submitted through the Probation Department’s Work Furlough Oversight Division. For felony cases, an attorney is required to complete the process. Jobs must meet certain conditions. They must be located within San Diego County, offer more than minimum wage, and allow probation visits. Self-employment is allowed with sufficient documentation and a verifiable office location. People with certain convictions—especially violent crimes, sex offenses, or life sentence felonies—are automatically disqualified. The program also evaluates candidates based on education, work history, mental health, and risk of re-offense. Violating Work Furlough rules can result in immediate removal and return to jail.
