(28 Dec 1994) Eng/Nat The UN commander in Bosnia Sir Michael Rose has condemned ceasefire violations during a visit to the Bihac safe haven. The current five-day truce is looking increasingly shaky with attacks continuing on government troops. But Rose pressed ahead with attempts to get an agreement for a longer truce. Lt. General Sir Michael Rose flew over the mountains into Coralici, a small town north of Bihac. It's the base for a Bangladeshi UN battalion. Soldiers there have been effectively marooned since the beginning of October and are now short of food and winter supplies as well as spare parts and fuel for their vehicles. General Rose travelled to Bihac town and had a 30-minute meeting with General Atif Dudakovic, commander of the Bosnian government's hard-pressed 5th corps. He's trying to set up a comprehensive four-month ceasefire to follow the current truce, which began on Saturday. Dudakovic spelt out the Bosnian government's ground rules for a ceasefire, while Rose agreed to carry Dudakovic's proposals to Fikret Abdic, leader of the renegade Muslims. SOUNDBITE: The ideas I've suggested to general Dudakovic he is referring back to his council SUPER CAPTION: Lt. Gen. Sir Michael Rose SOUNDBITE: (voice of interpreter) Our position is that aggressive forces have to withdraw to the other side of the border and to demilitarise the border and finally to bring peace here to this region. SUPER CAPTION: General Dudakovic In an hour-long meeting with Abdic in the northern town of Velika Kladusa Rose discussed the terms under which Abdic's forces would stop their attacks on Bosnian-held territory to the south of Kladusa. SOUNDBITE: Well, we went to see Mr Abdic and put the point to him that really we couldn't allow the whole of the peace process in Bosnia-Hercegovina to be affected adversely affected by what was happening in the internal conflict line and subsequently I've heard from him that he's agreed to a ceasefire on his side which is, of course, a good step forward. SUPER CAPTION: Lt. Gen Sir Michael Rose SOUNDBITE: Well, these are positive developments but it's still going to require more work. So we have our work cut out but these are definitely positive indications. SUPER CAPTION: Ed Joseph, UNPROFOR Although no ceasefire was signed today all sides say an agreement to bring peace to the embattled enclave could be imminent. However, Croatian Serbs and Muslim rebels ignored Rose's visit and kept up their attacks on government troops, despite the latest truce.
