What is 3D Modeling?

Project Engineer James Knoll explains what 3D modeling is in about 90 seconds. www.dewberry.com Hello. My name is James Knoll, and I'm a highway engineer in Dewberry's Mount Laurel office. 3D modeling is a technique in computer graphics for producing three-dimensional representations of objects or services. In recent years, 3D modeling has become widely used in a large variety of industries and mediums. Artists may use a special software to develop a three-dimensional representation of scenery or characters for use in illustrations, video games, or movies, while an engineer or architect may use a similar software to create 3D models of their projects and design. Prior to the advent of computers, engineering designs had been drafted by hand, but as technology evolved, computer software became a common engineering tool. Currently, designs and plans are drafted using computer-aided design software and the visuals created are generally in two dimensions. Since the engineering design process is very iterative, whenever a change to the design is made, the visual generally needs to be changed as well. By using 3D modeling, it is possible to more easily see how the changes in one area of the design may affect the overall design. For example, a 3D model of a pipe network may reveal that several pipes in the network are colliding with each other, or that the pipes might be colliding with other design elements. For a highway engineer, a model of a roadway may show that raising the profile in one area may cause drainage issues down the road. While it may be possible to spot many of these issues with a two dimensional representation, depending on the complexity of the design, it will likely be difficult and time consuming, but with 3D models, it is easier to locate these issues and determine how to correct them. Overall, 3D modeling allows engineers to develop a better understanding of what their designs will look like once constructed, thus making it an invaluable tool for developing more accurate and constructable designs. Thank you.
