If typical indoor palms are boring you and you want a more hardy specimen, then you should check out the pygmy date palm. Coming to our country about half a century ago, these guys are the new kid on the block. They don't get too large at all, so they are a perfect potted plant pal for those just starting out, or ones that don't have the space for a rather large tree. True they do need to be outside for the growing months, but if kept inside you could counter this with artificial grow lights. Mine loves them!
