The city of Ypres is located in the province of West Flanders in Belgium and its golden years were in the Middle Ages when it became a leading player in the textile industry. In particular, it became as well positioned as other cities such as Bruges and Ghent. Its closeness to France played an important role throughout its history, first as a commercial partner and then during the First World War, when it sadly became the epicentre of one of its bloodiest and most destructive battles. Indeed, it was here that the Germans, in April 1915, used poison gas as a chemical weapon by the first time, which is why this gas is also known as iperite. At the end of the war, Ypres was completely destroyed and was later rebuilt mainly with the money paid by Germany in compensation for war damages. The good news is that its citizens rebuilt the city according to the original plans, which is why Ypres still retains its beautiful medieval aspect.
