Russia's aggression against Ukraine has sparked the largest war in Europe since 1945. It is also the first war in which drones are being used on a large scale, both in the air and at sea, and the first major conflict that can be characterised as a hybrid war, combining conventional military operations, cyberattacks and the active use of disinformation. The latter is a key element of Russia's war propaganda, aimed at its own population, Ukraine and the outside world. Organised by the Davis Centre for Russian and Eurasian Studies (Harvard University) and the Fundación Ramón Areces, this lecture by Serhii Plokhii (Plokhy), Professor of Ukrainian History in the Mykhailo Hrushevsky Chair at Harvard University, will analyse the origins of the most recent European war and explain the reasons for the return of the Cold War to the same region where it ended 30 years earlier.
