Hello Flower Friends! I'm Ellen. Sign up for my FREE weekly newsletter (https://www.ellenfrost.com/join-now) for more flower fun! I write flower profiles, chronicle my flower adventures and share flower stories. In this video I identify common floral design mistakes and how to fix them. The first mistake I see all the time among inexperienced designers is not cleaning the stems. All of the stems need to be stripped of leaves below the opening of the vase. Leaves inside of the vase look messy and unprofessional. There is also a functional reason to clean the stems. Leaves in the vase can contaminate the water with dirt and bacteria which reduces the overall vase life of the flowers. Another common error is designing without the viewer in mind. It can be easy to fixate on one side of an arrangement or ignore perspective. Designers are looking down on the arrangement as we work. Be sure to turn the arrangement while working and consider the eye level of the viewer. Varying the heights of the flowers is an technique that shows you're a pro. New designers often create static arrangements by cutting all stems the same length. Create dynamism and interest while showing off focal flowers by layering blooms at different heights. Don't stuff your vase. Over-stuffing is common mistake by over-zealous designers. I know, I get excited too by all of the beautiful flowers. But, flowers need space to be seen and to move. Finally, you got to maintain. Cut any failing blooms and pull dead stems out of the arrangement. Change the water daily and give the entire arrangement a fresh cut ever few days. This will keep your design looking good longer. Join flower friends on all my online flower spaces. Subscribe to this channel to learn about sustainable floral design.
