How Did Myra Hindley Die? Myra Hindley’s name will continue to dominate the UK crime story. You must have heard about the Moor Murders. How Myra Landed in Prison Have you seen our video entitled, “The 4 UK Women Jailed for Life Without Parole”? You likely have learnt something about Myra Hindley. If not, please endeavour to watch it to background your understanding of this evil woman. We have other videos that tell different aspects of the story of this dreaded criminal. This particular video attempts to answer the question, How did Myra Hindley die? But before we go there, would it not be good to summarize her journey to the prison and her prison escapades? She met Ian Brady in January 1961 for the first time. On 11 October 1965, Myra was arrested with her lover Ian Bradly who had been apprehended 4 days earlier after the arrest of Ian. She was charged with murdering 5 young people in the 1960s. Their trial which lasted 14 days began on 19 April 1966 in a specially prepared courtroom. They escaped the death penalty, since death as the maximum punishment had been abolished just 6 months earlier, thanks to The Murder (Abolition of the Death Penalty) Act 1965. She was thus sentenced to life imprisonment. Failed Attempt to Be Released She had appealed her sentence up to three times, but her appeals were thrown out. After losing all her appeal, Myra tried to transform herself into an honourable woman while behind bars. We saw it in newly-released prison papers that she took up genteel hobbies such as pottery, badminton, and tapestry. Deteriorating Health On Friday, 19th of December, 1997, news broke that Myra was taken to Dryburn Hospital for undisclosed tests. Due to her notoriety, she was kept in a single room watched by an armed guard during her stay in the hospital. Hearing the news of Myra’s failing health, the mother of the victim Keith Bennett, Winnie Johnson, asked Myra to tell authorities where she buried her son before it would be too late. She expressed a desire that Myra suffered before she died. Her Last Moments and Death On 10 January 2000, Myra asked her lawyer to draw up her will. Though the surgery was deemed a success, doctors continued to describe her condition as "fragile." On Tuesday, 29th of February, 2000, BBC TV announced a plan to air a documentary that depicted Myra’s desire to die for her crimes. A Prison Service spokesman said her next of kin had been officially informed of her death before the news filtered out. Interestingly, a routine coroner's inquest was called for although the official cause of death had already been determined. That was because she actually died in custody. The Aftermath In a statement issued by Greater Manchester Police after Myra’s death, it was revealed that investigations into matters arising out of the Moors murders case continued. The statement said that police would always investigate any fresh evidence or valuable information that might lead to the discovery of the location of the body of Keith Bennett.
