(18 Feb 2021) Anti-coup protests continued Thursday in Yangon, Myanmar's biggest city, with over a thousand protesters at a major junction outside the Hledan Centre which has been their gathering point for previous protests. Among those marching was a group made up of many of Myanmar's ethnic races, who carried their flags and called for a swift end to the new military junta. Police security were monitoring the rally, making sure protesters did get in the way of traffic at the junction. The protesters have called their cause a civil disobedience movement and are calling for the release of detained leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The military seized power on February 1, the day newly elected parliamentarians were supposed to take their seats - a shocking backslide for a country that had been taking tentative steps toward democracy. The junta said the takeover was necessary because Suu Kyi's government had failed to investigate fraud claims in elections her party won in a landslide; the election commission has dismissed those claims.
