istanbul turkey 2021 | Besiktas Istanbul TOUR | 4K UHD 60FPS | Turkey 4k tour | APRIL 2021 | 4K WALK Beşiktaş Located in the intersection of Barbaros Boulevard, Beşiktaş Avenue and Çırağan Avenue, the Beşiktaş borough lends its name to the district of Beşiktaş. In Byzantine times Beşiktaş was known for the Ayios Mamas Palace (the emperors’ summer residence), the Fokas Monastery, and the Ayios Mihael Church. The latter was built in the period of Constantine I and was a famous center for Greek, Armenian and Georgian pilgrims. The residence identity of the area came during the Ottoman era. The cove of Beşiktaş was convenient/favorable/suitable to use as a dock even before the 17th century. So, Barbarossa Hayreddin Pasha (1478-1546) – the chief commander of the navy in the Ottoman Empire (Kaptan-ı Derya) – started to use the bay to anchor the Ottoman fleet. He had a seaside mansion (yalı) built for himself and stayed there when he was in Istanbul. Today, Besiktas is home to a significant portion of Istanbul's financial and business centers. It is calculated that the population of the district, which is 200 thousand at night, exceeds 2 million during the day. Besiktas is becoming a central business area with its location in Istanbul in the 1950s. Levent, a neighborhood of garden houses, is growing with new areas added (Second, Third, Fourth). This is followed by Etiler and Akatlar neighborhoods, which start with cooperative houses and rapidly become apartment buildings. During this period, wooden buildings were replaced by apartments. In the 1970s, the construction of the Bosphorus bridge, one foot in Ortaköy, affects Besiktas in many ways. The hills behind Ortakoy-Rumeli Fortress, Balmumcu, Fulya-Gayrettepe, Kültür Quarter and Ortaköy-Rumeli Fortress are rapidly opening to settlement.
