On the 10 October the international community celebrates the 21st World Day against the Death Penalty. Abolition of the Death Penalty worldwide is a priority of the European Union. We are marking this important day through an event co-organised with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights. Opening remarks (video messages) will be provided by the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security of the African Union Commission, H.E. Bankole Adeoye, and the EU Special Representative for Human Rights, H.E. Eamon Gilmore. Joining speakers from both continents - at government and civil society level - the event will showcase important developments on the abolition of death penalty, namely in Africa. Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Zambia and Ghana abolished the death penalty in June, September and December 2022 and July 2023 respectively - becoming the 24th, 25th, 26th and 27th abolitionist states in Africa. The event is held in Addis Ababa, at 13.00 CET.
