For 60 years, Royal Navy vessels, patrolled the west coast of Africa and the Atlantic capturing over 1,500 slave ships and liberating 150,000 slaves. In 1808, the West Africa Squadron, also known as the Preventative Squadron was formed. Eventually it would consist of 25 Royal Naval vessels that policed the coast of West Africa intercepting slave ships.
