Join us as we visit Jaisalmer in this city travel guide covering the best things to do and top attractions in the 'Golden City' of Rajasthan, India. Located nearby the Pakistan border and at the doorsteps of the Thar Desert 'The Great Indian Desert' this small sized jewel of a city is a welcome change for those arriving from bustling Delhi, Jodhpur or Jaipur. Jaisalmer Fort is one of the most amazing places I've ever visited in India. As a living fort you'll find a plethora of shops selling souvenirs, restaurants, hotels and Jain temples. You can get lost meandering down narrow alleys and enjoy the best views of the city along the edges of the walls or by having rooftop tea or dinner. You'll also want to budget time to visit the Thar Desert on a camel safari ride where you'll pass by gypsy villages and enjoy local cuisine and tea prepared over a fire. Come find out why Jaisalmer (जैसलमेर) is one of our favorite cities in Rajasthan, India. Known as the Golden City, Jaisalmer instantly captures our hearts and becomes a highlight of our entire India trip. 🏰 Exploring Jaisalmer Fort – The Living Fortress Our journey begins at the awe-inspiring Jaisalmer Fort (जैसलमेर फोर्ट), one of the world’s few remaining living forts. Within its ancient walls, the fort is alive with color and activity: local merchants, bustling hotels, tempting restaurants, and winding alleys that invite endless exploration. The sunlight gives the stonework an unforgettable golden glow, and the fort’s hilltop setting provides stunning views across the desert landscape. 🛍️ Colorful Shopping Sprees Wandering through the fort’s maze, we dive into vibrant shops filled with beaded wall hangings, sequined pillowcases, and intricate paintings. Our luggage gets heavier with each purchase! We have fun choosing quirky shirts (including the “Mr. Mustache” special), dream up home décor ideas, and debate turning scarves into makeshift turbans. Shopping here is irresistible with its endless array of colors and textures. ⛩️ Marveling at Jain Temples Inside the fort, we visit the ornate Jain Temples (जैन धर्म), famous for their breathtaking carvings and spiritual ambiance. The detailed stonework is some of the finest we’ve seen, making these temples a must-see for architecture and history lovers. 🍽️ Rooftop Dining & Sunset Magic Evenings in Jaisalmer are pure magic. We enjoy dinner on a rooftop terrace at Jaisalmer Oasis restaurant, serenaded by live local music and surrounded by a panoramic, 360-degree city view. Watching the sun set over the city’s golden skyline is an experience we’ll never forget. 🌙 Getting Lost & Nighttime Adventure As night falls, the fort transforms into a mysterious maze. It’s easy to get lost in the labyrinth of alleys once the lights go out, but wandering here is part of the adventure. Eventually, we find our way and grab a tuk-tuk back to our hotel, ready to rest up for more adventures. 🐪 Camel Safari in the Thar Desert No visit to Jaisalmer is complete without a camel trek in the Thar Desert. We join an afternoon safari, first stopping in a traditional Rajasthani village (with plenty of goats to befriend). Then, we saddle up on camels for a bumpy, memorable ride across the sand dunes—Sam demonstrates his graceful mounting skills. The desert is vast and peaceful, and our caravan enjoys every moment. 🏛️ Palaces, More Shopping & Lake Views Back in the city the next day, we revisit the fort for a deeper dive into its history at the Jaisalmer Fort Palace Museum & Heritage Center. Sam and his mom squeeze in some last-minute shopping for family souvenirs. The day ends with a visit to Gadisar Lake (गाडिसर झील), a serene spot perfect for boat rides and catching the fiery desert sunset—easily one of the most beautiful in India, rivaled only by those in South Africa.
