In this video, I discuss the procedures to correct facial asymmetry. Facial asymmetry is a condition where there is a major discrepancy in the form or functions between the right and left sides of the face. As a maxillofacial surgeon, this is one of the most common concerns that I encounter from my patients on daily basis. Now symmetry is very important for a face to have a good aesthetic as well as balanced functions on both sides of the face. Asymmetry can result from an excess or a deficiency of tissues from one side of your face to another. Causes of Facial Asymmetry: This differential excess of deficiency can occur either because of genetic tendency or due to an injury or infection of the facial tissue during their growth phase. The differential facial growth occurs when one side of the face grows more or less than the other, causing Facial Asymmetry. What procedures are used to correct facial asymmetry? 1. Corrective Jaw Surgery It is used to reposition the jawbones into a more balanced and proportionate position. In the case of facial asymmetry, the jawbones are separated from the rest of the facial skeleton and the complex is rotated along the axis to augment the height of the underdeveloped side in order to achieve symmetry. The bones are well fixed in this new more symmetrical position to achieve facial symmetry. 2. Facial Distraction Osteogenesis Distraction Osteogenesis allows for lengthening of the underdeveloped and under grow of jawbones, facial bones and facial soft tissues on the deficient side of the face. This is done using a metallic distracted device which is placed on the cut bones and activated gradually and sequentially after the surgery. This device is later removed after the tissues have consolidated. 3. Bone Reduction When the bones on one side of the face are larger than the other, the excess bone can be surgically trimmed or shaped down to achieve symmetry and balance. 4. Augmentation When tissues are smaller than the other on underdeveloped or undergrown side, they can be augmented by means of tissues like fat or bones or by means of insertion of artificial implants. The amount of augmentation can be pre-planned on scans and simulation software to make sure the final augmentation results in good facial symmetry.
