What is the diameter of a circle? We'll be defining chords and diameters of circles in today's geometry video lesson! A line segment whose endpoints both lie on a circle is called a chord of the circle. The longest chords of a circle pass through the center, and these chords that pass through the center are called diameters of the circle. Although there are infinitely many diameters of any given circle, every diameter of the same circle has the same length. Thus, we'll often say "the diameter" to refer to the length of any diameter of a particular circle. We may also use "the diameter" to refer to a line segment that is a diameter, even though it is only one diameter of many. We also briefly go over the radius of a circle. A radius of a circle is a line segment with one endpoint as the center of the circle, and the other endpoint being on the circle. The lengths of all radii of a given circle are the same, and thus we often say "the radius" to refer to the length of any radius of a particular circle. The radius is half the diameter.
