Wild lettuce or lactucarium has long been used for pain relief. Lactucarium contains lactucin and lactucopicrin. It has been used for a variety of symptoms including pain. It has also been used to induce sleep. Wild lettuce (Lactucarium Virosa) native to Iran, Austria, Scotland, Germany and France, also grows invasively here in the United States. Here on the homestead farm located in the Smoky Mountains, (southern Appalachian Mountains), we see it wherever we abstain from cutting, where we leave vegetation for the wildlife and natural habitat. A milky why substance similar in appearance to that of unripe opium poppy seed pods, leaks from the stalk when cut or scratched. However it does not contain any opium in the wild lettuce stalk or leaves. It has been used as a sedative for centuries and into the 1800s. Lactucarium may deliver effects as opium but with fewer side effects. It is also referred to as “opium lettuce.” Some create tinctures made from extracts with the milky substance and are marketed to treat a wide range of conditions including: anxiety breathing issues poor sleep joint pain The leaves can be eaten raw as a food. Warning: There can also be psychoactive properties. It is sometimes used recreationally by people looking for a natural buzz. The substance is bitter much like other pain remedies. *Though wild lettuce has been used since ancient times to treat pain, very little scientific evidence its use in humans. **Those with addictions have been known to use this plant as an alternative to become free of their opioid addictions. Welch Family Homestead believes in natural sources when used responsibly. God bless you is our prayer.
