A performance of "Henan Xiaoqu"《河南小曲》on the gehu (革胡), a Chinese 4-stringed bass bowed string instrument with python skin covering the right side of the resonator, which was developed by Yang Yusen (杨雨森, 1926-1980) in 1958 to replace the cello in modern traditional Chinese orchestras. Although its cylindrical resonator has a very different shape from that of the cello, the gehu essentially imitates the cello in terms of its structure, principles of sound production, tuning, and playing technique. The gehu player is Mr. Dong Jinchi (董金池, b. Tianjin, 1946), a renowned cellist and longtime principal cellist of the Tianjin Symphony Orchestra. In this performance, Dong is accompanied by the Tianjin Symphony Orchestra (天津交响乐团). The arrangement of this piece was made by Dong himself. "Henan Xiaoqu"《河南小曲》is a famous solo piece for the erhu (二胡, Chinese 2-stringed vertical fiddle with python skin-covered resonator), which was composed in 1962 by the noted huqin (胡琴, Chinese vertical fiddle) virtuoso Liu Mingyuan (刘明源, 1931-1996), based on Henan dadiao quzi (河南大调曲子), a genre of traditional accompanied narrative singing (Chinese: shuochang, 说唱) from Nanyang (南阳市), southern Henan province, central China. Filmed as part of a concert called "Fifty Years of Genuine Passion: Dong Jinchi Solo Concert" (真情五十年—董金池独奏音乐会), which took place at the Chinese Theater (中华剧院) in Hexi District, Tianjin, northern China, October 21, 2006.
