“Who Goes There?” by John W. Campbell Jr.

“Who Goes There?” by John W. Campbell Jr. Most of this review will be included in the written description. Just as I finished my reread and research of John W. Campbell’s “Who Goes There”, I saw Liminal Spaces recent review on the topic, consequent films and publications, highly recommended! John W. Campbell Jr June 8th 1910 – July 11th 1971. 61 years. Most SF folks know JWC was a massive influence on all SF, and was first a fan, an author, and approximately a 33 years long employee/editor of Astounding/Analog 1937 – 1971, and the only editor from May 1938 – July 1971. JWC guided a large group of SF authors that produced many new and original concepts in SF with the guidance of a great editor and experienced author, his accomplishments are enormous. “Who Goes There?” seems to have been worked on for a year or so, placing the exact year it was written is difficult. I can find no exact year Argosy rejected it, maybe 1936/37, and several revisions followed. JWC was roughly 26 years old, when first written. JWC wrote SF frequently using a variation of his first wife’s name – Dona Stewart, changed to Don A. Stuart, among a few other pseudonyms. Here is a link to the Internet Archive copy of the August 1938 Astounding, containing the original illustrations. The magazine now sells for around $1000.00. I should have bought one back in 1970!! https://archive.org/details/as_1938_0... I will also reference in this review “Adventures In Time And Space” 1946 by Healy and McComas, “The Science Fiction Hall Of Fame Volume Two A” 1973 by the SFWA, The Best of John W. Campbell” 1976 by Lester Del Rey, and “The World Turned Upside Down” 2005 by David Drake, Eric Flint, and Jim Baen. Perhaps “The Golden Age of Science Fiction” really began with “Who Goes There”. van Vogt’s “Black Destroyer” is a better written story and easier to follow. However, “BD’ is patterned after JWC’s technique, read the descriptive prose detailing the environment of the location in the first paragraphs of JWC’s story, and the depictions of the characters, and then read “Black Destroyer”. Again, not a criticism, everyone learns from what has come before! Van Vogt’s “Black Destroyer”, “Discord in Scarlet”, “Vault of The Beast” – the liquid Terminator in Terminator 2 that can imitate - all of his works between 1939 and 1955 influenced most of what we call “Science Fiction”. A. E. van Vogt came across the August 1938 Astounding magazine containing "Who Goes There?" that John W. Campbell had written under his Don A. Stuart monicker. This motivated van Vogt. This Van Vogt interview is from Fantasy Review Oct/Nov 1947. "I read half of it standing there at the news-stand before I bought the issue and finished it. That brought me back into the fold with a vengeance. I still regard that as the best story Campbell ever wrote, and the best horror tale in science fiction." For the next six months his mind was full of science fiction plots, and finally he sent one to Editor Campbell asking if it would make a yarn for Astounding. Campbell thought it would, gave the newcomer some hints. “I was an absolute unknown as far as he was concerned” and the result was "Vault of the Beast," which duly appeared in the August '40 issue of Astounding. Scroll down to the “Creator of Slan” section for van Vogt’s quotes on JWC’s “Who GoesThere?” https://web.archive.org/web/201407250... The “Who Goes There” influence on written SF, film SF, all SF, is massive. A noticeable influence on “Invasion of The Body Snatchers” by Jack Finney. The novel is widely considered to be an analogy/allegory to the two Totalitarian Systems causing the most recent World War. Directed by Don Siegel. https://therokuchannel.roku.com/watch... Other Influenced works, there are a lot! Just a couple: An excellent version of “Who Goes There?” by “The Outer Limits” producers, 1995 Season One Episode 15. “The Voyage Home”    • The Voyage Home   Here is a weird, wild, low budget film, that I saw at 17. 1972 Christopher Lee/Peter Cushing/Telly Savalas. The links to “Who Goes There?” are pretty clear. A frozen alien inside a primitive human, with the ability to possess and control humans, create zombies, transfer memories, etc. is stranded on Earth. The alien is discovered and placed on a trans-Siberian train and comes to consciousness, terrorizing the isolated train passengers. Traveling from China to Russia with a Rasputin like character, there are slipped in remarks referring to the Russian Revolution.    • Horror Express | Full HD Movies For Free |...   For those interested, I have 2 papers on JWC, a review of Nevala – Lee’s “Astounding” and one on the duration of “The Golden Age”, available here: https://independent.academia.edu/JoeB...
