Rip One - The Essence is a legendary underground tape. It's one that easily rests in my top 5 tapes of all time, and I'm about to bore you with one of the reasons. Get your popcorn! It was a typical weekday morning back in 1998, probably while I was having breakfast and casually flipping through the local newspaper, when my eyes stumbled upon a classified ad that caught me off guard. "DJ Mixtapes - Trading and Buying." My initial reaction, "What the fuck?" You see, DJ Mixtapes were a deeply underground thing; usually picked up at raves or directly from DJs themselves. Why in the fuck am I seeing a classified ad in my local newspaper about them? Without hesitation, I called the number, and a voice on the other end introduced himself as Gary. We decided to meet up and exchange a glimpse of each other's tape collections. Gary and I realized that our collections were.. different. I had amassed an assortment of gabber, house, trance and jungle, while Gary boasted an extensive collection of turntablism. Names like Q-Bert, Z-Trip, and DJ Noize left me scratching my head, wondering who these DJs were. Similarly, Gary was equally puzzled by the likes of DJ Trance, Ron D Core, R.A.W, and Thee-o from my collection. Gary gave me a few tapes during that initial meetup, one being Rip One - The Essence. I had no idea what to expect, but my mind was absolutely blown upon first listen. From the intro on Side A, "What can you do to stay true? Don't worry about being true, if your true it'll happen naturally", to hearing "The Mexican" the first time (21:00). This mix had so much soul! DJ's in the rave scene weren't scratching like this, they weren't mixing like this, what in the hell was I listening to? Gary and I would go on to become good friends. He became partial to gabber; especially Mark N and the Bloody Fist crew. We'd spend many nights hanging, watching Turntable TV, spinning gabber and scratching the night away. He introduced me to hip hop and turntablism, and I introduced him to techno and rave. Then, life happened.. We lost touch over the years, and I also lost my copy of "The Essence" in the process. Despite managing to track down most of Rip One's other tapes and even sharing them on this channel, "The Essence" remained impossible to find. I've seen offers of $500 for this tape throughout the years, WTF! "Underground lives forever baby, we just like roaches" As luck would have it, Gary and I recently re-connected. And you know what my first ask was after the vanilla "how ya doings"? "Send me The Essence Asshole!" So here it is, re-united after 25 years and stoked to share it with you all. The tape that single handedly started my journey into turntablism and scratching. There are still breaks on this tape which I've yet to identify. This is a monster of a mix! If this is at all up your ally please do yourself a favor and listen with headphones. Cheers to friendships that span multiple decades.
