GetSportsFocus.com - by: Nick Round Ask any Bellarmine lacrosse player and they will tell you that the game they grind all off-season for is the matchup against Saint Ignatius at home. Friday afternoon, the Bells (11-4) had their chance to do what no other varsity lacrosse team at Bellarmine has done, beat Saint Ignatius (15-0) at lacrosse. The Bells started out firing on both sides of the ball leading to the games first goal after 5:21 of play by Bellarmine sophomore attackman Tyler Mackin. This 1-0 lead would be the Bells only lead of the game, and it would not last long. By the end of the first quarter, the Wildcats of Saint Ignatius led 4-1. On a Saint Ignatius roster where 18 out of the 34 players are seniors, the experience and chemistry of the Wildcats squad was too strong for the Bellarmine defensive and offensive efforts. Without the spectacular performance by Bellarmine senior goalie Lawrence Zhou, the Wildcats offense looked to score 20-plus goals throughout the game. Six different goal scorers put their name on the stat sheet for the Bells accounting for all six of their goals; oppositely of Saint Ignatius junior Joe Lang who led the Wildcats with his scoring effort of multiple goals. Lang's ability to dodge from the right side using his strong left hand and useful stick skills opened up plenty of opportunities for himself as well as his teammates for 14 goals throughout the game. The Wildcats will look to continue this offensive streak with them to the east coast when they face Chaminade (NY) and Seton Hall Prep (NJ) next week. The big games do not end for the Bells either, with big away matchups against De La Salle from Concord and San Ramon Valley to wrap up their regular season. The all anticipated WCAL championship matchup most likely will host both the Wildcats from Saint Ignatius and the Bells of Bellarmine for their third head-to-head game this season. Predicting the result of that game will be determined by how well both of these teams finish up their respective schedules. If all goes as planned for these teams, project this potential third and final matchup to be the most competitive this season.
