Das Hachijō Onsen Hotel auf der abgelegenen Vulkaninsel Hachijōjima wurde 1959 eröffnet und war Teil eines ambitionierten Tourismusprojekts: Die tropische Insel sollte zum „Hawaii Japans“ werden. Mit heißen Quellen, großen Poolanlagen, einem exotischen „Jungle Bath“, Speisesälen, Gärten und Unterkünften bot das Hotel über Jahrzehnte hinweg Erholung in paradiesischer Umgebung – nur wenige Flugstunden von Tokio entfernt. Besonders in den 1960er- bis 1980er-Jahren galt das Resort als beliebtes Reiseziel. Zeitgenössische Prospekte zeigten Palmen, türkisfarbenes Wasser und moderne Innenräume – ein Sinnbild für den Traum vom tropischen Urlaub innerhalb Japans. Doch der Erfolg war nicht von Dauer. In den frühen 2000er-Jahren versiegte die Thermalquelle, die das Herzstück des Hotels darstellte. Ohne Onsen verlor das Resort seine Existenzgrundlage. Der Betrieb wurde eingestellt, die Gäste blieben aus – und das Hotel wurde schließlich vollständig aufgegeben. Heute steht das Hachijō Onsen Hotel leer. Die Gebäude sind stark verfallen, überwuchert von Vegetation und der salzhaltigen Meeresluft ausgesetzt. Poolanlagen, Lobby, Speisesäle und das einstige Dschungelbad sind noch erkennbar, befinden sich jedoch in einem fortgeschrittenen Zustand des Verfalls. Eine legale Nutzung oder ein regulärer Hotelbetrieb existieren nicht mehr. Eine Rettung oder Wiederbelebung gilt als äußerst unwahrscheinlich. Die fehlende Thermalquelle, hohe Sanierungskosten und der bauliche Zustand machen eine Zukunft als Resort nahezu unmöglich. Stattdessen bleibt das Hotel ein stilles Mahnmal vergangener Tourismusvisionen – ein Ort zwischen Traum, Scheitern und Vergänglichkeit. The Hachijō Onsen Hotel, located on the remote volcanic island of Hachijōjima, opened in 1959 as part of an ambitious tourism project. The tropical island was meant to become the “Hawaii of Japan.” With hot springs, large swimming pools, an exotic “Jungle Bath,” banquet halls, gardens, and guest accommodations, the hotel offered a resort-like escape in a paradise setting—just a few hours from Tokyo. During the 1960s through the 1980s, the resort enjoyed its peak popularity. Contemporary brochures depicted palm trees, turquoise water, and modern interiors, symbolizing the dream of a tropical vacation within Japan. However, the success did not last. In the early 2000s, the hotel’s thermal spring—the very heart of the resort—ran dry. Without access to hot spring water, the hotel lost its foundation. Operations ceased, guests disappeared, and the complex was ultimately abandoned. Today, the Hachijō Onsen Hotel stands empty. The buildings are heavily deteriorated, overtaken by vegetation and exposed to the harsh coastal climate. Pool areas, the lobby, banquet halls, and the once-famous Jungle Bath are still recognizable, but all are in an advanced state of decay. The site is no longer in use, and there is no legal or active hotel operation. A restoration or revival is considered extremely unlikely. The absence of a thermal source, the immense cost of renovation, and the severe structural damage make any future reuse unrealistic.
