The SEACOND research project, led by LADICIM and funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, marks a key milestone with the installation of this artificial reef pilot in the Port of Bilbao. The project addresses the critical durability challenge of maritime structures, where traditional metallic reinforcements suffer severe chloride-induced corrosion, drastically reducing their service life. SEACOND's core innovation is the study of non-metallic reinforcements (such as Fiber-Reinforced Polymers, or FRP) as a substitute for traditional steel. By eliminating the corrosion risk , this technique enables the valorization of concrete waste materials, such as recycled aggregates contaminated with chlorides, which are currently discarded. This installation, carried out in collaboration with companies like Rocacero, Viuda de Sainz, and the Port of Bilbao Authority, will serve as a full-scale demonstrator. The pilot will be monitored for at least one year with a dual objective: ➡️ Engineering: To evaluate the long-term mechanical performance and durability of the "eco-concrete". ➡️ Ecology: To analyze how its irregular structural design promotes the proliferation of marine biodiversity, acting as a habitat for local fauna and flora. This project merges materials engineering and environmental sustainability, aiming to reduce the ecological footprint of construction in the marine environment.
